Une initiative du Centre de production DAÏMÕN (Gatineau) avec la participation des centres dartistes AVATAR (Québec), SÉQUENCE (Chicoutimi) et OBORO (Montréal), le Module des arts de lUniversité du Québec à Chicoutimi et le Département des arts visuels de lUniversité dOttawa.
Rencontré à l’occasion de sa participation à Send + Receive : A Festival of Sound à Winnipeg en 2004, Peter Cusack est invité à animer, dans quatre villes du Québec, une série dateliers intitulée Field Recording & Phonography. Cette série dateliers, élaborée et animée par Peter Cusack, permet aux participants dexplorer, au moyen dune écoute active, lenvironnement acoustique et le paysage sonore de leur ville. Les participants sont initiés à des techniques et à des technologies denregistrement audio dans des conditions spatiales et environnementales spécifiques.
À cette occasion, une performance solo de lartiste est présentée par SÉQUENCE, le 24 février à 19 h, à la Maison de lenvironnement à Chicoutimi, et par DAÏMÕN, le 1er mars à 20 h, au StudiÕ du Centre de production DAÏMÕN à Gatineau. De plus, une conférence de lartiste est présentée le 22 février à 16 h au Module des arts de lUniversité du Québec à Chicoutimi et, le 6 mars à 13 h 30 au Département des arts visuels de lUniversité dOttawa. Au cours de ces conférences, Peter Cusack nous entretiendra de ses plus récents projets denregistrement (Lake Baikal, Azerbaïjan, Favourite London Sounds), et de son expérience, pendant un récent voyage en Chine, du paysage sonore de la région du Xinjiang.
Peter Cusack est artiste sonore, musicien et « sonographe » denvironnement. Il sintéresse particulièrement à lécologie acoustique. Outre ses activités de composition, décriture et dimprovisation, il réalise régulièrement depuis le début des années 80 des expéditions denregistrements dans des régions spécifiques, lieux dintérêt sonore singuliers tels que le Lac Baïkal en Sibérie ; les champs pétrolifères dAzerbaïdjan ; et la région du Xinjiang en Chine. Il s’intéresse tout spécialement à la migration mondiale du son par le déplacement des personnes et via les nouvelles technologies.
En 1998, Peter Cusack entreprend le projet Your Favourite London Sound, qui a pour but de découvrir ce que les Londoniens aiment dans le paysage sonore de leur ville. Il participait récemment à lévénement Sound & the City, projet dart sonore lancé en octobre 2005 par le British Council à Pékin.
Il collabore fréquemment avec des artistes issus dautres champs de pratique, notamment le cinéma danimation, la vidéo, linstallation et lart public. Avec la vidéaste suisse Ursula Biemann et des étudiants de luniversité architecturale de Bakou, Azerbaïdjan, il vient de terminer Baku: In 5 Quarters une étude des diverses esthétiques de planification de Bakou dans le contexte de son histoire pétrolière, y compris leurs effets sur le paysage sonore local. Avec Isobel Clouter, il a produit Vermilion Sounds, une série radio mensuelle sur lenvironnement sonore pour Resonance FM de Londres, qui présentera bientôt sa 50e émission.
Peter Cusack est maître de conférences au programme Sound Arts & Design au London College of Communication et il anime des ateliers en captation sonore dans plusieurs régions du monde, notamment, en 2004, à la School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Il vit à Londres.

A Series of Workshops / Performances / Public Talks

An initiative of DAÏMÕNs Centre de production (Gatineau) with the participation of the artist-run centres AVATAR (Quebec City), SÉQUENCE (Chicoutimi) and OBORO (Montreal), the Module des arts of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi and the Department of Visual Arts of the University of Ottawa.
We met Peter Cusack, an internationally renowned sound artist and recordist, at the Send + Receive : A Festival of Sound in Winnipeg in 2004 and invited him to lead a series of workshops in four Quebec cities entitled Field Recording & Phonography. This series of workshops will enable participants, by means of active listening, to explore the acoustic environment and new approaches in sound ecology. Participants will also be invited to familiarise themselves with audio recording techniques and technologies in specific spatial and environmental conditions.
As part of this Quebec-wide tour, Peter Cusack will offer solo performances at SÉQUENCE on February 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Maison de lenvironnement in Chicoutimi, and at DAÏMÕN on March 1 at 8:00 p.m. at its StudiÕ in Gatineau. In addition, Peter Cusack will give a public talk on February 22 at 4:00 p.m. at the Module des arts at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. He will also give a talk on March 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Visual Arts Department of the University of Ottawa. Among the topics he will discuss at these talks are his most recent recording projects (Lake Baikal, Azerbaijan, Favourite London Sounds), and his experience during a recent trip to China of the sound landscape of the Xinjiang region.
Peter Cusack is a sound artist/musician and environmental recordist with a special interest in acoustic ecology. Project activities range from song writing, through improvised music, to research on how sound contributes to our sense of place and recording projects that document areas of special sonic interest – most recently Lake Baikal, Siberia; the Azerbaijan oil fields; the Xinjiang area, China. He is very interested in the global migration of sound through movements of people and via new technology. In 1998 he initiated the Your Favourite London Sound project, which aims to find out what Londoners find positive in their city’s soundscape. Currently involved in Sound & the City, the British Council sound art project in Beijing, 2005-06.
He frequently collaborates with other artists, especially in film/video, installation and public art. With Swiss video artist Ursula Biemann and students from the Architectural University in Baku, Azerbaijan, has just finished Baku: In 5 Quarters – an examination of different planning aesthetics in Baku in the context of its oil history, including their effect on the local soundscape. With Isobel Clouter he produces Vermilion Sounds, a monthly radio series on environmental sound for Resonance FM, London, now approaching 50 shows.
Peter Cusack is a Senior Lecturer in Sound Arts & Design at the London College of Communication and gives field recording workshops worldwide, including at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (summer 2004). He lives in London.
