Set between the sea and the mountains in Carleton-sur-Mer in the Gaspé region of Quebec, the artist-run centre Vaste et Vague is the only accredited contemporary arts centre in a 550-kilometre stretch of coastline. It supports professional artistic enquiry and experimentation.
Its mandate consists in bringing together artists of the region, promoting contemporary visual art, providing a place for the exchange and confrontation of ideas, supporting the artistic enquiry and experimentation of its member artists, raising awareness on the part of the public of emerging artistic practices and promoting the pairing of “culture and education”. Vaste et Vague has a relatively new space of approximately 38 linear metres, with 130 square metres of wall space and 122 square metres of floor space. The height of the gallery is from 5 to 6.2 metres.
The centre is part of the cultural complex Le Quai des arts. For its work of disseminating art, Vaste and Vague’s programming offers its visitors multidisciplinary exhibitions. We also organize major events such as on-site creation symposia, multidisciplinary encounters and public talks
Our artist in residence program promotes encounters between artists and students and the general public. Our documentation centre for contemporary art is accessible to artists, students and the general public. Vaste et Vague is a veritable laboratory for artistic enquiry and experimentation. We organize a series of workshops in numerous artistic disciplines including performance art, engraving, painting with rough materials, casting techniques and other disciplines. Our policies regarding equipment loan and rental promote the fair use of this equipment by our members and the artists who frequent our centre.
