Studio XX is a feminist artist-run centre involved in media art exploration, production and criticism.. The organization’s mandate is to encourage the production and dissemination of network-based and Web art works as well as audio, video and interactive work conceived by women. It is devoted to introducing more and more people to new media by offering training workshops, particularly with open-source software. Studio XX thus allows members to shape–in their own way–the digital space.
Among the activities of Studio XX are its Femmes Br@nchées salons, where artists, theorists and activists share their thoughts and work with an audience invited to react; the HTMlles Festival, a biennial international event exploring the multiple facets of digital technology and the Web as production and exhibition media; .dpi, Studio XX’s electronic publication, which approaches questions and issues specific to women and to their relationship to new media and to the contemporary technological landscape. Studio XX’s residencies offer artists the opportunity to experiment with new tools and methods in a context of artistic production. We are particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches and welcome collaborative projects with other professionals. Studio XX also strives to develop a network of experts in order to respond to the needs of the resident artists on both technical and theoretical levels.
Studio XX wishes to provide women artists with the necessary technological means to create their own works by way of production workshops: website production, PHP and databases, on-line audio, electronic audio, MAX/MSP and microcontrollers, the fabrication of solar batteries, etc. The Lab, to which access is free for members, consists of six hybrid Mac/Linux stations with high-speed wireless Internet connection.
