Agence TOPO is a Montreal artist-run centre dedicated to the production, dissemination and distribution of independent multimedia works. It was founded in 1993 initially to promote all possible forms of photography.
Today it initiates and produces collective web art projects while disseminating and distributing art and experimental CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and DVD-videos. An on-line showcase for fiction, Agence TOPO’s primary focus is on the convergence of visual art with literature and new media, the renewal of narrative genres within the context of the Web, and the presence of a network of artists coming from diverse creative and cultural horizons. Since 1998, TOPO has produced eight collective Web works featuring some 60 visual, media, theatre, audio and literary artists. These have been presented at over thirty electronic art festivals around the world. The organization receives proposals from centres, collectives, curators and artists of all disciplines who are interested in producing innovative multimedia works.
Artists who are chosen for production residencies receive personalized technical support as well as production and presentation fees. Agence TOPO is devoted to both increasing the production of author-driven content and to the dissemination and distribution of independent multimedia works through the Web and via physical delivery media. The organization offers a section on its website called Archives, which is a space where it is possible to present artists’ projects which were initially created for an exhibition context and are not, or are no longer, hosted anywhere on the Web. The Vitrine électronique is for its part is a space for the promotion and dissemination of works on CD and DVD. The Vitrine offers a catalogue of 60 titles.
TOPO also organizes dissemination activities by way of exhibitions and screenings, as well as showcases at international digital and electronic art festivals.
