Founded in 1987, Action Art Actuel (AAA) is an artist-run centre located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the Montérégie region. Its mandate is to disseminate and promote contemporary visual art. It organizes exhibitions, publications and produces off-site events as well as conferences, round-tables and discussions. The multidisciplinary centre is particularly interested in supporting practices which are hybrid either by the nature of the media they use or by the questions and issues they raise. It privileges artistic projects that significantly fit into prevailing current artistic practices and contemporary inquiry as well as into prevailing current themes that take into account their temporality and context. Because we wish to encourage dialogue, we promote collaboration, communication and the circulation of ideas by the organization of satellite activities involving both Quebec artists and artists from the international art community. These activities take the shape of occasional off-site events, collaborations with other cultural organizations as well as curatorial and publication projects. The centre is also involved in regional activities, making it a lively and well attended place. Set up in 2005, an artist-in-residence program enables artists to spend a period of time of variable duration dedicated to research and creation. This space, adjacent to the exhibition centre, consists of a residential area and of a work studio. Action Art Actuel also pursues an educational mission through workshops offered to groups of school-aged children, as well as the development of workshops for the general public.
