CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2013 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
SISTERS, OR Caldera is pleased to announce a call for applications for its 2013 Artist in Residence program. Every winter from January through March, creative individuals and collaborative groups from all over the world are welcomed to Caldera Arts Center in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains near Sisters, Oregon for one-month long residencies. Because we believe a range of backgrounds enhances the communal experience, residencies are open to national and international artists of any discipline, as well as creative thinkers in engineering, design and the sciences who have emerged and established themselves beyond university training.
“Our ensemble had a place to work without distraction or interruption, to live and eat and breathe the work we were making. Caldera is a place that says to the artist: What you do is important. Please keep making art,” commented recent resident Jacob Coleman.
The geographic and disciplinary diversity of applications reflects Caldera’s belief that creativity is an innate quality of all individuals. It also confirms Caldera’s perspective that diversity enhances the experience of all residents at Caldera, creating a broader arena of ideas in which participants can share their work.
Residencies give individuals unencumbered time and space to develop new work within a creative and supportive community. Over the years, Caldera residents have created books, musical compositions, performances, paintings, films, sculptural works and photographic projects that are now a part of the cultural fabric of Oregon and the world.
Successful applicants stay in Caldera’s A-frame cabins, designed to inspire and nurture. Equipped with simple kitchens, private bathrooms, wood stoves and plenty of space for creative work, the cabins lie along Link Creek. Two visual art studios and a beautifully designed performance space (including a half-sprung floor) are also available. Surrounding Caldera are miles of hiking trails as well as a cerulean blue, 350-foot-deep lake, aptly named Blue Lake, a geological caldera and the second deepest lake in Oregon.
To apply for a residency at Caldera, applicants must submit a formal application (available for download or through an online submission manager) by June 15, 2012, along with a project description, work samples and the application fee. All applications are reviewed by an admissions panel made up of professionals in the various disciplines. The awards will be announced in early September. To apply go to:
